Fisherwick Accessibility

Fisherwick Presbyterian Church is situated at the junction of the Malone Road and Chlorine Gardens and has been a South-Belfast Landmark for over 120 years. Many people know the building and have walked or driven past it for years, but it is only when you come inside that you realise what a welcoming and accessible space it is.

The church faces out onto the Malone Road, almost directly opposite Eglantine Avenue, and the halls and offices that sit behind the church are accessed from Chlorine Gardens. There are level pathways and walkways all around the church, and the pathways and car parks are illuminated at night.

The church has two main car parks, both with dedicated disabled parking bays. The main car park on the Malone Road has an accessible pathway with a handrail, leading to the front of the church and a second ramp leading to the choir room.

The rear car park, accessed from Chlorine Gardens, provides level access to the new glass-fronted Welcome Centre, which has a powered door with a low level touch-pad for entry.

The Halls Complex was renovated and re-purposed between 2018 and 2020 as part of our Community Outreach Project, to provide a modern, functional and accessible space. The building has a lift for access to the 1st floor and has disabled toilet facilities with handrails and emergency pull cords on all levels. All the rooms are accessed by wider doors, and have motion-activated lighting to ensure safe entry. There are two disabled refuge points on the first floor with call points linked to the emergency phone system, situated at the main fire exit on the ground floor.

We were delighted to be presented with a Prestige Access Award in November 2019, from the William Keown Trust, for highlighting the achievements and promoting the dignity of people with disabilities.
